My Reason Why

Music has always been more than entertainment to me. It’s been therapy, connection, and at one point, survival.

I’ve always believed a song can reach people in a way regular conversation can’t. It can carry the weight, say the hard thing, and make a stranger feel a little less alone. That’s what music has always done for me. It helped me sort through emotions I didn’t know how to explain, and it gave me a way to connect with people from all walks of life.

There’s a part of my story I don’t talk about much, but it’s a big part of why I do this. In 2010, I jumped into the Texas music scene right out of high school. I was young, shy, and had no clue what I was doing, but by 2015 I had put out a 10-song album and was building real momentum. Then, right when things were moving, I quit. I convinced myself I couldn’t have both music and a family someday, so I walked away.

That decision sent me down a hard road. After a failed move, a broken relationship, and a season of feeling like I’d thrown my whole life away, I found myself at the lowest point I’ve ever been. I nearly took my own life. Two of my best friends stopped me, and that night changed everything. Music became part of what pulled me back together. It gave me a way to say what I couldn’t say out loud, and the truth is, every time I’ve walked away from it, there’s been a hole in my life.

My name is Sul Ross, and this is my fundraising campaign.

Up Til Now

Over the years, I’ve built this thing one step at a time. I released my first full album back in 2015 with the Old Sul Ross Band. Since stepping back into music in a serious way, I’ve released songs like Scootin Boots, Weatherman, Broken Road, Only Dance to Straight, and 90s Again. I’ve played places like Luckenbach, Hoots Hall, Melody Ranch, The Backyard, the TCMA Madam Pearls Saloon Song Swap, and Founders Day Festival in McGregor, Texas.

I’ve also been nominated for Male Up and Coming Texas Country Artist at the Texas Regional Radio Awards in both 2025 and 2026, and for both Country Male Vocalist of the Year and Modern Country Artist of the Year at the 2026 Josie Awards. Along the way, I’ve opened for artists like Cody Johnson, Kyle Park, No Justice, and Sam Riggs.

The Next Step

The difference now is I’m not chasing this like some wild kid trying to outrun everybody. I’ve got a wife, two beautiful kids, a degree, and a life built on solid ground. I know who I am now. And I honestly believe this next music is the best work I’ve ever made.

To do it the right way, I’ve partnered with Edgewater Music Group to help bring this next project to life. We already have major-label distribution lined up, which means this music has a real path to go farther than I could take it on my own.

The Challenge

But making real moves in music is expensive, especially for independent artists. Recording, production, mixing, mastering, musicians, promotion, release costs — it all adds up fast. And like a lot of artists, I’ve been carrying as much of that load as I can myself.
